What is an editor’s margin?
Even the margins tell a story.
The “editor’s margin” was originally extra space writers left blank in their manuscripts so the editor had room to write critiques and feedback.
Thoughts are scribbled in the margins; ideas take shape, and words learn their power.
At The Editor’s Margin, editing is not simply correction; it’s a collaboration between editor and author.
I bring the reliability of academic training, along with enthusiasm for your growth as a writer. If you need thoughtful feedback, precise corrections, and true encouragement, you’re in the right place!
Whether it’s a dissertation, novel, memoir, or content for your business, I approach each project with the same care: honoring your voice while ensuring clarity
because words matter.
I have always loved words. They've been my passion for as long as I can remember. My education was geared from the start to help me go even further in the areas I already thrived, which meant hours of poring over books, writing, and rewriting. I discovered that editing was my talent and passion.
I began pursuing an editing career in February 2019, two weeks before COVID began. I moved to Memphis, TN to work with the director of The Cornwall Alliance in an assistant role. During that time, I learned how to refine my work even further, and improved on my naturally detail-oriented skills. I worked on familiarizing myself with editing and improving my understanding of logic and critical thinking.
While I worked for The Cornwall Alliance, I attended the Center for Western Studies. This was a major time of growth. I discovered a new love for learning and built a foundation for knowledge. I gained a perspective for seeing the world, as well as the tools to better analyze and synthesize information using logic, history, beauty, and the Bible—I constructed a worldview.
Maria VerMulm—the editor behind The Editor’s Margin
My greatest goal in life is to grow my soul to a greater capacity, that I may be filled with the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:19). I want to hold, and therefore give, more of Christ’s love and beauty to those around me (especially my children someday). And I’m convinced that the best way to do this is by exposing myself to as much truth, beauty, and goodness as possible. So, while I edit as a career, my greatest calling is to glorify God, and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
My husband and I live in Berks County, PA, along with a cat who hates everyone but us. We enjoy traveling and experiencing other cultures.
You might think that with my proclivities to academia, my hobbies would continue in that strain. However, I enjoy a variety of tangible activities as well. I love rock climbing, camping, and generally getting outside. And I especially love making meals for friends and family, and hosting new people. Hospitality is how I share with others the blessing I have received.
