Blue or Black Ink

Writing in pencil seems so insincere.
Anything said can be taken back — erased like it never happened.
Permanency thrown out the window.
It’s sad, but most people live their lives writing in pencil.

A pencil reminds me of a promise never intended to be kept.
We make a promise and leave a way to erase it,
like a backdoor escape strategy.
Writing in pencil lets people know that you believe there will be a mistake.

When you sign your name,
they say the signature must be written with a pen
in blue or black ink.
So think carefully, because you can’t take it back.

Promises have been made to me;
I didn’t realize they were in pencil.
By the time they were erased, it was too late.

So if you love me, write it in blue or black ink.
